I originally discovered Smithey Ironware from an article in my Southern Living. The hardest part of the process was finding a box suitable for shipping my heavy dutch oven to them. The rest was easy AND quick. My dutch oven originally belonged to my grandmother (and possibly her. mother who owned a boarding house in SC in the early 1900's.) It was handed down to my mother, and I can vividly remember it atop her stove full of savory goodness. When my mother passed the 8-quart dutch oven came to my home, and I stored it in a cupboard and never thought about it again (for 24 years). My husband and I recently moved and rediscovered the pot while packing for the move. It was rusted and in sad shape, and I didn't know how to bring it back to life. Enter Smithey. Once I read the article I initiated the restoration, and the rest is history. My dutch oven looks brand new. I felt this deep sense of connection with my mother and grandmother when I pulled it out of the box. I am looking for recipes now so that I can fully embrace cast iron cooking. I have dropped hints to my husband that I would like the Smithey cast iron cleaning kit for Christmas. I could not be more pleased.
