This Skillet is everything I expect from a cast iron Skillet and more. I love it!
Been using since the day it arrived. Very nice skillet. I couldn't find the first imperfection on this factory second, so that speaks volumes on their QC. Seasoning sticks to the smooth surface just fine. I didn't know where the myth that it doesn't came from, but I've had zero issues. Planning to add more pieces in the future, for sure.
Let me start by saying — this skillet has easily become one of my favorite pieces of cookware, and that’s coming from someone who doesn’t hand out praise lightly.
I picked up a Factory Second No. 12 Smithey cast iron skillet, and I couldn’t be more satisfied with what I got. The factory second designation? Purely cosmetic. The “flaw” on mine is so minor that it honestly gives the skillet character — something that says, "I’m built to work, not just sit pretty on a shelf." Performance-wise? It’s absolutely top-tier.

The cooking surface on mine is already developing a solid seasoning after just a couple of light oven treatments at 500°F using grapeseed oil, and the food release is better than I expected at this stage. Plus, I didn’t strip it down or baby it — just cleaned it, seasoned lightly, and went to work.
This skillet holds heat like a champ and distributes it evenly across the pan. I’ve used it for everything from crispy deep-dish pizza (with a thinner crust, just how I like it) to searing steaks, and it hasn’t disappointed once. The tall walls give it versatility for shallow frying, sautéing, or even baking, and it feels rock solid on the stove.
What surprised me most is how smooth the finish felt — no bumps, no rough patches. Just a consistent surface that’s begging to be used more and more. After the second seasoning run,…
Great skillet. I love it. Can’t wait to add to my collection.
