Like your Smithey skillet, high-quality leather wears in and gets better with time.
When it came to crafting our leather sleeves, we sought out to find a partner who honors our same standard of being sourced and made in America. After careful research and trial runs, we met Luke from Kingfisher Leatherworks.
We're excited to bring you our new leather sleeves, sourced and handcrafted right here in the USA. The sleeves are made with saddle-grade, full-grain leather, custom-tanned for Smithey.
We took a trip out to Kingfisher's small manufacturing facility to see the process for ourselves, and Luke walked us through how each element is built to hold up to years of use, the same way your Smithey skillet does.
First, each sleeve is die-cut from American tanned cattle hide. Each hide is tanned by S.B. Foot Tanning Co. in Red Wing, Minnesota. They take great pride to source cattle from a 200 mile radius, ensuring the highest standard of care and quality. S.B. Foot was founded in 1872, and still operates to the highest standards today.
Next, the sleeves are carefully stamped with a gold Smithey Quail. They are then stitched with heavy saddlery thread and reinforced with brass rivets. The threads are pulled tight and the loose ends are burnt off so the stitching rarely comes loose and can be repaired if needed. We’ve also updated this design to include an extended thumb grip, giving you more control at the stove. The shape is contoured so it slides easily onto the handle of your skillet.
